In 1966, the BBC televised a play that showed the social injustices faced by young women with children.
This powerful TV play showed a young women being left destitute and having her children taken away - no social services support, no benefits, no rights.

Valerie, my mum, spearheaded a campaign in Sheffield to show that this was happen not just on TV, but were happening right now and in Sheffield too.

My mum was a strong campaigner and advocate for those who had no voice and were vulnerable.

My mother's voice formed a collective of others efforts, up and down the country, which led to the beginning of social reforms and the inspiration for two national charities - Crisis and Shelter, both of which have an office base and presence within Sheffield.

On a personal level, my mother supported and advocated for others all her life, right up until her final moments. Her strong sense of advocacy gave others without a voice, the power to be heard.
